Cala Morell, the most important necropolis in Menorca
The Cala Morell necropolis is one of the largest necropolises in Menorca, and the best preserved. The necropolis, or City of the Dead, is a set of 15 caves excavated in the rock, that served as collective tombs, although over the centuries they have been given different uses. This prehistoric Menorcan cemetery dates from 500 BC, in the middle of the late Talayotic period. Each cave belonged to a family or clan, which buried their dead according to their own methods and traditions. Today the caves are empty and accessible to the public.
The Necropolis of Cala Morell can be visited all year round and its entrance is free. It is located 10 kilometers from Ciutadella de Menorca, and about 15 minutes by car from it. It has its own parking and is located near the beach of Cala Morell, with several restaurants open during the summer season, and the Coastal Settlement of Cala Morell, from the Bronze Age.
